The computer you purchased and the operating system running on it are 2 different things.

All software companies have a life cycle for their products.

I don't know why everyone is acting so surprised about this. Its not like they just sprung this on everyone last week.

But this isn't just any ol' software- it is fundamental. One can change their browser or media player or yet another version of Pong easily. This involves technical skills that are a bit more complex for the average bear and/or a capital investment in a hardware upgrade that some folks may not have the coin for. The kicker is that the OS is not broken, but that they will be breaking it.

Company A sell me a product that works just fine for many years. Then Company A comes back one day and breaks it. Hmmmm.

Breaks it? Where is it said that Microsoft is going to make XP not function anymore...

It will work just fine.

They just no longer support the product or release any updates to the software.

Effectively - the warranty is expired and you're own your own.
